Life in a Microhabitat

Small Worlds, Big Impacts


Most people have heard legends of Little People. Tiny creatures, often winged or possessing magical capabilities, that live in tiny homes beneath flower petals and inside tree holes. They go by many names and wear many faces: fairies, pixies, gnomes, brownies, leprechauns, Yunwi Tsundi (Cherokee) and so much more. As we grew older, many categorized these legends under a nostalgic haze, but the idea of tiny worlds inhabited by tiny people is not simply childish wonder. In fact, our world is bursting with life.


A microhabitat is defined by the National Geographic Society as “a small area which differs somehow from the surrounding habitat.” Its unique conditions may be home to species not found in the larger surrounding area. A mossy log. A plot of leaf litter. A glimmering rock pool. An ancient tree’s rot hole. These are all examples of microhabitats, and they are pulsing, ever-changing worlds.


Tripped over. Stepped over. Pushed aside or simply forgotten. Microhabitats are tiny specks in the eyes of many travelers, irritating holes or insignificant dots along a much grander plane. Even worse, some view them as “blemishes” and will forcibly dig up stumps, fill in pools, and alter small natural depressions. Nature is more than an aesthetic, yet its worth is often ascribed to its decorative value.


Vincent van Gogh once wrote, “If one truly loves nature one finds beauty everywhere.” It is easy to understand how an artist who so vividly captured the earth’s rich colors and fluid movements would understand the weight of the mundane, the beauty in the ordinary. So, let us zoom into the life of a microhabitat.


Life After Death


Log rot is driven largely by wood-decaying fungi, including fungi responsible for brown rot, white rot, and soft rot. These organisms thrive under the right moisture conditions and break down components of the wood. When fallen logs remain damp, decomposition can accelerate, transforming once-living wood into habitat and eventually returning nutrients to the surrounding ecosystem.

A Snag at Chipco Preserve teems with life on the inside. It is both a buffet and a place for young woodpeckers to refine their pecking skills.

Luckily, nature is excellent at recycling. Fungi are joined by bacteria and invertebrates that continue the work of breaking down strong wood into softer organic material. Nutrients once contained within the tree are gradually returned to the soil, where they can support plants and other organisms.


During the decomposition process, the log serves other purposes. Salamanders, small lizards, beetles, millipedes, earthworms, ant colonies, snakes, and newts may find sanctuary beneath or within its decaying structure. Mosses and lichens can grow across the wood, while birds investigate cavities and loose bark in search of insects. Snails and slugs graze across damp surfaces rich with mosses, fungi, algae, and microscopic life.


Dead and decaying wood can serve as a miniature city for forest life. Fungi, bacteria, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, mosses, and lichens can all depend upon dead wood directly or indirectly for food, shelter, reproduction, or other ecological functions. Yet logs, stumps, and old trees are often among the first things removed when land is cleared or a landscape is made to look “tidy.” What appears dead to us may, in ecological terms, be remarkably alive.


Our Tiny Worlds


Our rock pools hold more than fish. The waters can carry seaweed, phytoplankton, crustaceans, limpets, barnacles, mussels, and countless smaller organisms. Our tree hollows contain more than birds. They can house fungi, beetles, ants, squirrels, bats, possums, microscopic mites, and even store rainwater during dry periods. The underside of a leaf is not just color and lines. It can be home to guard cells, mildew, aphids, insect eggs, leafhoppers, and organisms too small for us to notice without looking closely.


Life is not simply what you can see, smell, or hear. Life is overflowing. Bursting. Exploding. Stronger than a violent storm and more passionate than a Shakespearean sonnet, our world is more complex and intricate than anything we could ever hope to fully understand.


The fairies and pixies of legend are not the only ones who live secret lives. Our society is only one part of an enormous, interconnected ecosystem. We share our surroundings with worlds unfolding beneath logs, inside tree hollows, under leaves, and within patches of moss that most of us walk past without a second thought.

Perhaps being a good neighbor begins with noticing them.



Leave some small worlds undisturbed. A fallen log, patch of leaves, tree hollow, or other natural feature may look messy to us while providing food, shelter, moisture, or breeding habitat for other species. Where it is safe to do so, consider leaving some of these features in place.


Resist the urge to make nature too tidy. Removing every fallen branch, dead leaf, stump, and patch of decaying wood can also remove habitat. A healthy landscape does not always look manicured.


Discover what lives nearby. Turn observation into exploration. Photograph insects, fungi, mosses, lichens, amphibians, and other organisms you encounter and use community-science resources to learn what they are.


Protect the small places. Conservation is often imagined on the scale of forests, wetlands, and entire species. But those larger systems are composed of countless smaller habitats. Protecting biodiversity also means protecting the little places where life happens.


At Chipco Preserve, conservation means protecting more than the wildlife we immediately notice. It means protecting the logs, leaves, hollows, soil, water, fungi, insects, and relationships that make wildlife possible.

Sometimes protecting a habitat begins by recognizing that what looks insignificant to us may be an entire world to something else.
