When the Fireflies Disappear

I saw a firefly this evening, a single amber light rising and falling near the cebter of the yard. It flashed once, disappeared into the darkness, and then appeared again a slight distance from the previous spot. I stood there longer than I expected to, waiting for the next small pulse of light. What surprised me was not that I had seen a firefly, but that seeing one had become something worth stopping for.


There were summers as a kid when no one counted them. They were simply there, scattered through the grass and hovering at the margins of the woods, so numerous that their abundance seemed permanent. We chased them as children because there was no reason to imagine a summer without them. Their lights belonged to the evening in the same way cicadas belonged to the trees and thunderheads belonged to the late afternoon sky. We did not know we were being given something to remember.


A firefly lives within a web of conditions that we rarely see when we notice only the light. Much of its life is spent close to the soil, among moisture, leaf litter, small prey, and the shelter of an undisturbed place. Its adult life depends upon darkness, because the flashes we admire are part of a conversation between fireflies. Too much artificial light can drown that language. Pesticides can change the ground beneath them. Development can remove the damp margins and quiet places where their lives begin. The little flash above the grass is therefore only the visible portion of a much larger set of relationships.


I held on to that thought for a time. If a firefly can reveal something about the condition of the place where it lives, I wondered what the human equivalent might be. At first I thought of people who work close to the land, those who know the water, forests, birds, or seasons especially well. But the answer seemed broader than that. Perhaps what humans contribute is memory, the accumulated knowledge of what a place has done before.


People who stay in relationship with a place begin to learn its habits. We notice when certain flowers open, when frogs begin calling after rain, when migrating birds return, when cicadas emerge, and when the first insects of summer begin to appear. Much of this knowledge enters us quietly. We are not necessarily studying. We are living, watching, hearing, remembering. Over time, a landscape becomes familiar enough that its changes can be felt before they can be measured.


I have watched barred owls return year after year and listened for the rough calls of their young. I know the surprise of seeing painted buntings appear again and the seasonal return of monarchs. These observations do not seem extraordinary when they happen, but together they form a record. They teach us what a place is capable of producing when its relationships remain intact.


Ecologists sometimes use the term shifting baseline syndrome to describe what happens when each generation accepts the environment of its youth as normal. The idea is unsettling because the change can be so gradual that no single generation recognizes the full loss. One person remembers fields filled with fireflies. Another remembers only a few dozen. A child growing up now may see five and consider five abundant.

The child is not mistaken. The child has simply inherited a different baseline.


This is one of the ways loss hides itself. A river carries fewer fish, and after enough years fewer fish becomes normal. Spring arrives with fewer birds, and eventually no one expects the old chorus. Butterflies become occasional visitors instead of companions to the season. A dark field that once shimmered with hundreds of tiny lights holds ten, and then two, and someday perhaps none. If no one remembers the earlier abundance, absence becomes difficult to name.


In that sense, ecological loss can happen twice. The first loss occurs in the land. The second occurs in human memory.


Perhaps this is why childhood experiences in nature are more consequential than we usually understand. A child standing among hundreds of fireflies is receiving more than a beautiful evening. The child is being given a measure of abundance. Years later that memory may become a question: Why are there fewer now? What happened to the field? When did the nights become so bright? What changed?


Memory is not the same as scientific evidence, nor should it replace careful measurement. But memory can point science toward questions it might otherwise never ask. Long before anyone establishes a transect, collects a sample, or creates a population model, someone often says, “There used to be more.”


The firefly I watched this evening did not exist for my instruction. Its light was not a message meant for human beings. It was speaking to another firefly. That may be what makes the encounter so humbling. We are witnesses to a conversation that does not require us, yet our actions can determine whether that conversation continues.

For one small light to rise from the grass, the soil had to remain suitable for the life beneath it. Moisture had to persist. Prey had to be available. Vegetation had to offer shelter. Darkness had to arrive with enough darkness still in it. Somewhere nearby, another firefly had to survive as well.


The flash lasted only a second, but behind it stood an entire community of relationships.

Human beings also live within those relationships, though we have become remarkably skilled at imagining ourselves apart from them. We speak of nature as something we visit, protect, restore, or manage, as though we stand outside the circle. Yet our memories tell a different story. We know seasons through what returns. We recognize home partly through the voices and movements of other beings. We carry the knowledge of where frogs once gathered after rain, where fish once ran, where birds once nested, and where fireflies once filled the evening.


For much of human history, the calendar was not only a sequence of numbered days. Time was also understood through relationships. When this plant flowered, another being arrived. When the rains came, something emerged. When the nights warmed, the grass began to blink with light. The land kept time, and people learned to read it.


When those relationships are broken, something in the human world is lost as well. The landscape becomes quieter, but so does our knowledge of it. Names disappear from conversation. Expectations shrink. A generation can inherit a diminished place and never know that it is diminished.


That possibility may be one of the most difficult forms of environmental change to recognize. We can lose abundance slowly enough that forgetting accompanies the loss.


I saw one firefly this evening. But I am glad I noticed it. Its light reminded me that a firefly is not merely an ornament of summer. It is the visible expression of relationships beneath the grass, within the soil, across the darkness, and between one small living being and another.


Our part may be different. We can remember.


And perhaps remembering is one of the ways we keep a something from disappearing before our eyes.


Leave a Little Darkness



Turn off what does not need to be lit. Fireflies use their own light to find one another. Porch lights, landscape lighting, and other artificial light can interfere with those signals. When possible, turn unnecessary outdoor lights off at night, particularly during the warmer months when fireflies are active.


Leave a little wildness behind. Fireflies spend most of their lives where we rarely notice them: near the soil, beneath leaves, around decaying wood, and among vegetation. A patch of unmown grass, fallen leaves beneath trees, or a quiet corner allowed to remain untidy can provide shelter, moisture, and places for larvae and their prey to survive.


Think twice before spraying. The insects, slugs, snails, worms, and other small organisms sharing a yard are part of the same ecological community. Pesticides can affect fireflies directly while also reducing the prey their larvae depend upon. A yard does not have to be sterile to be healthy.


Remember what you see. Notice when the first fireflies appear. Notice where they gather and how many you see. Tell children what summer evenings once looked like, and invite them outside to see what is there now. Photographs, journals, community-science observations, and family memories can all help keep yesterday’s abundance from quietly disappearing from our expectations.

Protecting a firefly means protecting darkness, moisture, soil, leaves, prey, vegetation, and the small undisturbed places where most of its life unfolds. Sometimes preserving the lights we love begins by leaving part of the night alone.
